With Halifax can i set up an account with them without putting money into it first..?

I went a few months ago to set up account and have the paperwork still but needs to be completed. Im currently the santander and i want to keep that so money gets paid into there til June for my ema money but i want to set up my halifax student account now....will i need to put money into it straight away? My money for job doesnt come til another week so i wanted to set it up tomorrow.
